The ultimate guide to an organised wardrobe
I have moved houses 16 times in the last 18 years. I have learnt a thing or two about packing and unpacking. I enjoyed the luxury of those walk in wardrobes but I also lived off suitcases for months.
And I lived to tell the tale.
As my personal contribution to the wardrobe-space challenged community I decided to put together a simple guide to help you get dressed in the morning in less than ten minutes without having to scuba dive into a chaos of pants and shoes. Remember, an organised and efficient wardrobe is also a sustainable one.
Here are my 10 commandments:
-
Prioritise being able to see most of your clothes; the more you see, the more you wear. Out of habit we always grab the same pair of jeans. Stats say most people only wear 20% of their clothes, 80% of the time!
-
Organise pieces by colour. Very efficient. You will go straight to the item you are after to complete your look AND is visually pleasing
-
Alternatively, organise into categories (skirts, pants, dresses, jeans)
-
Try to hang as much as possible. It is much easier to get the garment from the rack than up the shelves. Added bonus, most garments will look better and wrinkle less
-
Invest in good quality hangers: wooden and padded for delicate fabrics such as silk and linen. Stay away from the plastic and the wire ones as they tend to change the shapes of knits and other delicates
-
If possible, use drawers exclusively for underwear, sleepwear and activewear
-
Display your shoes in a shelf, filled them with socks to keep the shape. If not enough room, the space under the bed has done wonders for me
- Zips and buttons at the top, middle and bottom should be done up
-
Use boxes with labels and stack them above the wardrobe for the off season clothes. These must be washed before storing to prevent moth damage and mold
-
Keep jewellery and accessories in look-through boxes for better access
I hope this helps folks out there who are struggling to keep their wardrobes tidy and pretty.
